Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson has sent a fervid letter to the FA regarding Chelsea’s £15m winter signing of Ross Barkley.
Barkley was scheduled to join Chelsea during the summer for a reported fee of £35 million but the English International backtracked at the final moment. Now the midfielder has finally secured a move to Stamford Bridge but at a far lower price of £15 million meaning that Everton had to lose a substantial amount of money on the deal.
The Mayor of Liverpool who is a life-long Everton supporter has raised a few concerns over the deal.
“The fee was believed by many, including myself, to be a good deal and was based on him having just a year left of his contract,” Aderson said while referring to Ross Barkley’s failed transfer to Chelsea during the summer(as reported by Liverpool Echo)
“(This is a ) decrease in value of more than one million pounds a week. At best, this represents a very poor deal for Everton Football Club.
“At worst, it could be seen as a deliberate attempt to drive down a player’s value in the transfer market so as to benefit the player, his agent and the buying club.”
The Mayor of Liverpool feels that the January switch could have been a deliberate attempt to decrease the player’s value and he went onto add that he is in touch with the Liverpool police over Barkley’s move to Chelsea.
“I am so concerned about the circumstances surrounding this transfer that I am asking the appropriate police authorities to consider whether any fraud has taken place.”
