Why did Chelsea not go after Alexis Sanchez?

The Arsenal forward is close to joining Manchester United and the deal could be wrapped up in the coming few days. United seem to have overcome some heavy interest from neighbours Manchester City but if reports are to be believed then Chelsea too were eyeing a move for the Chilean International.

Chelsea were planning to make a move for Alexis Sanchez during the January transfer window after Antonio Conte had claimed that the forward was a ‘good investment’.

But according to the Evening Standard(as reported by the Metro), the Blues pulled out of a deal because they were unwilling to meet the wage demands of the 29-year-old.

Another big reason for Chelsea pulling out of the deal is the fact that they were not too keen on paying the player’s representative an additional £5 million – on top of the £35 million transfer fee that they had to pay in the form of a transfer fee.

Interestingly these are the exact same reason why Manchester City look to have fallen out of the race to sign Alexis Sanchez. The Citizens are unwilling to bow down to Arsenal’s demands as they think that the Gunners are charging way too much for a player whose contract expires in just 6 months.

Well, it seems that Chelsea and City’s loss is Man United’s gain.
