Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld – according to reports.
Alderweireld joined the Lilywhites in July of 2015 for a reported fee of £11.5 million and his current contract with the club expires in 2019. The deal does have a one-year extension clause which will push Alderweireld’s stay at the club until 2020 but the defender has up until now refused to put pen to paper on a new contract.
This delay in agreeing to terms has spiked the interest of a series of Premier League clubs who are reportedly interested in signing the 28-year-old defender.
According to the Metro, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is keeping a close eye on Alderweireld’s contract situation at Tottenham Hotspur and will launch a bid for the defender is he does not sign a new deal by the end of the current season.
United already have the like of Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof who are yet to feature heavily this current season but Alderweireld will undoubtedly be a fine addition to the squad.
If the club does decide to go for the 28-year-old during the summer then Mourinho will doubtedly offload a couple of defenders from his squad. The likes of Chris Smalling and Daley Blind have not fully won over the trust of the United manager and will definitely be the first in line to exit Old Trafford.
Having said that though, Manchester United will not have a free pass to signing Toby Alderweireld as both Chelsea and Manchester City are also interested in the defender and are likely to launch bids during the summer transfer window.
Pep Guardiola has publicly claimed he wishes to sign a couple of defenders to further strengthen his squad for the next season while Antonio Conte has struggled to find a perfect combination amongst his centre-backs this season.
But the big question is, will Spurs let him join a direct rival?
