Manchester United were knocked out of the Champions League by Sevilla on Tuesday night and it has very quickly gone from a possibly good season to a below average one for them.

Man United failed to score during the first leg in Spain and at home, on Tuesday they conceded two crucial away goals during the final quarter of the game. Mourinho’s men did manage to pull one back though thanks to Romelu Lukaku but in the end, United had to bow out of the tournament in a rather humiliating fashion.

While Mourinho has been heartless with his comments on the 2-1 loss but the fact of the matter is Man United have failed to win a Champions League knockout stage match for a very long time now.

So much so that since they last won a knockout match in the tournament things were very different in the European footballing circuit.

We take a look at some of the major footballing events that have happened since United last won a UCL knockout stage match.

1. Real Madrid have had a treble:

Real Madrid have managed to win the Champions League trophy, not one, not twice but three times since United last tasted victory in the knockout stages.

Real Madrid have won the 2014, 2016, and 2017 trophies and in doing so they have also become the first team to successfully defend their Champions League title.

2. Leicester City have been promoted to the Premier League and also won it:

When United last won a match in the knockout stages, the Foxes were still a Championship side. Since then they have been promoted to the top division in English football and not only that they have also managed to win the Premier League trophy.

Not only that their manager Claudio Ranieri has gone from becoming an average manager to a title-winning manager and then ultimately being sacked.

3. Chelsea have won the Premier League twice:

The Blues have lifted the Premier League title twice and that too under the reign of two different managers. And one of them was coincidentally Jose Mourinho while the other is his arch-rival, Antonio Conte.

Man United’s next game is at home on Saturday when they take on Brighton and Hove Albion in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
