Former Crystal Palace manager Frank De Boer recently stated that he feels sorry for Marcus Rashford as the youngster does not get too much game time under Jose Mourinho to which the United boss replied by calling De Boer the worst manager in the history of the Premier League.

But after Manchester United were knocked out of the Champions League on Tuesday by Sevilla, Frank De Boer decided to give a reply to Jose Mourinho’s statement.

After United’s defeat, a quote started circulating on various social media platforms which claimed that De Boer had replied to Jose Mourinho’s comments in a very sarcastic way.

De Boer reportedly said: “Mourinho might say I’m the worst manager in Premier League history, but tonight he’s a manager who has spent nearly £1bn in his career and his teams play like that.”

But now the actual statement has come out in the Dutch press and it is nowhere close to the things that have been circulating on social media.

De Boer told AD: “I respect him as a manager. He’s won plenty, is tactically very strong and knows how to disrupt his opponent’s game. That’s something I can learn from.

“It has brought some attention, my performance at BT Sport. I meant nothing personal about it when I said something about how Mourinho plays and about the role that Marcus Rashford has under him at United.

“That way of playing, that is a different view than we are used to in the Netherlands.

“But the philosophy of Mourinho and Manchester United is different. And that is also their right.

“It was also about England and the World Cup. If United buys Alexis Sanchez in the winter break, and then he plays him eight times out of 10 in Rashford’s position, England can suffer at the World Cup.

“Rashford is the greatest English talent in his age group.”
