PSG have bagged four successive Ligue 1 titles and reached four consecutive quarter-final appearances in the Champions League since Qatar Sports Investments took over the club in 2011.
However, success in Europe has eluded them and they wanted to change things around. They went on to splash a huge amount on Neymar and Kylian Mbappe to make PSG a force to reckon with.
They have already started their Champions League campaign in stunning fashion with drubbings of both Celtic and Bayern Munich and they sit pretty at the top of the pile.
Kante says the club is destined to go far. ‘PSG are super good! It’s a club that is made to go far,’ the Chelsea and France midfielder told Le Parisien.
‘They don’t have much to envy with the big European sides. They can reasonably hope to win the Champions League.’ Mbappe has continued to impress following his move from Monaco in the summer and Kante hailed the 18-year-old’s ‘technical quality’. ‘He’s doing some great things,’ Kante added. ‘He has great technical quality and bags of pace. ‘He scores, plays for others and had a head on his shoulders. He’s got some great years ahead of him, for sure.’
Kante has revealed PSG attempted to sign him but he has no regrets about rejecting them.
Kante told Le10Sport: “Do I regret that I rejected the PSG?
“No. When I was in Leicester, I had opportunities, but my priority was to stay in the Premier League.”
Former Chelsea defender Wayne Bridge is a big fan of Kante and compared him favourably to Claude Makelele.
“Kante is just like having another Makelele back,” Bridge told The Sun.
“He won player of the year and has made a massive difference in terms of a defensive midfielder, the way he gets around the pitch tackling.
“They had Matic who could sit a little bit for them but Kante is a totally different player.
“He reminds me of Makélélé so much when we did so well with him at Chelsea.
“He’s great for the team and he’s one of my favourite Chelsea players at the moment.”
Kante, who won named the PFA Player of the Year for his efforts at Stamford Bridge last season, was forced off in the first half of France’s win over Bulgaria on Sunday.
The former Leicester City man was clutching his left hamstring as he left the field and manager Didier Deschamps said after the match: ‘It’s a muscular problem behind the thigh. It is fixed for Tuesday.’ Kante’s setback means he is unlikely to be available for Chelsea’s trip to bottom-placed Crystal Palace next Saturday.
