Chelsea suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Manchester City on Saturday at Stamford Bridge. The match ended with a scoreline of 1-0 in favour of the visiting team and many neutrals might think that the match was a closely fought contest amongst the two sides. Sadly it was anything but that. Guardiola’s men had literally pinned Chelsea into their own half – so much so that that the Blues failed to launch any sort of attacking threat. And then it was a former Chelsea man Kevin De Bruyne who sealed the three points for City will a belter from long range.

After the match got over and Chelsea were sort of humiliated by the Blue half of Manchester, many people have started asking the question that why did Chelsea actually sell off the Belgium International in the first place. For those of you who do not know what we are talking about, Kevin De Druyne was actually a Chelsea player for almost two seasons before the then manager Jose Mourinho decided to sell him to Wolfsburg back in the January of 2014. But since then the 26-year-old has gone on to establish himself as one of the finest playmakers in world football.

Now ex-Chelsea legend and current pundit Frank Lampard has gone on to defend Jose Mourinho’s actions by saying that the Portuguese was right in selling De Bruyne. Lampard said that at the point when Mourinho sold the Belgian to Wolfsburg the Blues were spoilt for choices in the attacking midfielder’s position. They had the likes of Eden Hazard, Oscar and Willian who were much more apt to fit into the playing eleven as compared to De Bruyne at that time.

While speaking to BT Sport, Lampard said, ‘It was a difficult time for the club, you had (Eden) Hazard, Oscar, and Willian had just signed. He wasn’t as good as he is now,

‘Of course, it’s easy to look and say “why did you let him go?”, but he’s gone away and made himself a world-class player.

‘You always wonder about development. He had good pace, good passing, good dribbling, but at that point, he couldn’t get into our team’, Lampard added.

‘One thing he had was ambition, he wanted to go away and prove he was a player.’

Now, everytime an ex-player does well against their team a few section of the faithful are ready to point fingers at the management as to why he was sold in the first place. But here the Chelsea fans should realise that they too have some great players at their disposal. And to be honest enough it was just one bad game against perhaps the best team in England right now.
