Chelsea have agreed on a deal to sign AS Roma’s Antonio Rudiger at a reported fees of £34 million.

Reports suggested that Rudiger would fly straight to London after Germany’s Confederation Cup victory in order to complete his medical. But now it looks as if Rudiger has flown off the America with the view for a holiday.

But Chelsea are wasting no time to get the deal done. If sources are to believed then, the German International will complete his medical for Chelsea in America. American doctors will take care of his medical and the deal will hopefully be announced within this week.

But who exactly is Antonio Rudiger and how does he fit into Antonio Conte’s plans?

Player profile:

The 24-year-old is a German International who started his youth career at Borussia Dortmund. But after spending three years with the club, Rudiger joined VfB Stuttgart back in 2011. And this is when the defender truly came of age.

He spent four years with the German club before shifting his career to Italy. Rudiger joined AS Roma in 2015 for a fee of around €4 million. And now after spending two seasons in the Serie A and clocking up 72 appearances for Roma, the German International is finally moving to Chelsea.

What Rudiger brings to the team?

Rudiger is a player who has immense strength and a great physical presence. And these are the sort of qualities that make a great defender in the Premier League. Almost every Premier League side has a forward that is a bully. And Rudiger might just be Conte’s answer to that question.

Rudiger is predominantly a right-footed player who in a centre back. But owning to his versatility the 24-year-old can play anywhere in the backline. And this is where Antonio Conte will put the player to use. It is highly unlikely that Rudiger will straight away get in the centre-half position.  Cahill and Luiz have formed a formidable partnership at the heart of defence. And Conte will hopefully not play around with it.

So as of now, Rudiger will play most of his matches in the right-back position, given the fact that he is right-footed.
