Conte’s midfield crisis could give rise to a new look Chelsea side against London rivals Tottenham

Antonio Conte’s Chelsea perhaps had the worst possible start amongst the top six clubs from last season. While almost all of his title contenders managed to pick up points during Gameweek 1, it was only the Blues who suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Burnley.

Chelsea ended the game with nine men on the pitch as both Gary Cahill and Cesc Fabregas managed to get themselves sent off. But the loss is not the only thing that is worrying Chelsea and Antonio Conte. Those two red cards have started a chain of reactions which is likely to continue for a few more weeks. And one of the biggest issues that Chelsea will be facing as of now it the fact that their midfield lineup looks thinner than a wafer.

Cesc Fabregas is obviously suspended for next weekend’s game against Spurs and new signing Tiemoue Bakayoko too remains unavailable due to an injury. Add to this the fact that the Blues have loaned out a string of young players and you will suddenly realise what a gaping hole Chelsea’s midfield has.

So it is more than likely that Conte will have no other option but to field David Luiz in midfield while bringing a new defender to take the Brazilian’s place in the back line. But Antonio Conte will be hoping that his board can manage to bring in a new signing in the form of Danny Drinkwater before Gameweek 2 starts. Or else he will have to go with a make shift midfield line up. And with one small gaze at the Spurs forward line, it is fair to assume that Pochettino’s men will be shredding this patched up midfield into pieces.
