Diego Costa’s current situation at Chelsea is a bit complicated. To put it in a very nice way that is.
A few weeks back Costa was quoted saying that he had received a message from the Chelsea boss claiming that the Spaniard was no longer needed at the club. And from that point onward it was more or less evident that Costa was going to leave Stamford Bridge in the summer.
And Atletico Madrid was always going to be his preferred destination. Costa has always had a soft corner for his ex-club. And wanted to get back to playing under Diego Simeone. But now the situation has turned a bit more complicated.
Atletico Madrid have been slapped with a transfer market ban meaning that they will be unable to buy players up until January of 2018. And this causes a bit of a problem for Diego Costa.
We look at all the possible permutations and combinations regarding the transfer of Costa.
1. Atletico signs him up and loans him out immediately:
Well for starters this cannot be done. As per the FIFA rules, a club can only loan out a player if he is registered under them. And owing to the transfer embargo, Costa can only be registered as an Atletico player in January after the ban is lifted. So Atletico cannot sign him up and immediately loan him off to another club.

2. Costa waits out for six months:
If Costa really has Atletico Madrid on his mind then he will have no other option but to wait it out for six months. And then sign for Atletico in January. But this would mean that Costa will not be associated with any club for a full six months.
In an era where every minute of football is essential, we don’t think that Costa will like to take the risk of sitting out for such a long time.
3. Costa stays at Chelsea:
Antonio Conte has made it clear that Costa no longer fits his plans for next summer. But if the club does not find any suitable buyer then Chelsea will have no other option but to hold the player. And then sell him off to Atletico Madrid in the January transfer window.
But this would also mean that Costa will be more or less be a bench warmer as he will get very little game time. Add to that the fact that Chelsea will have to dish out large sums of money as wages.
