East Bengal played their first match of the Federation Cup against Churchill Brothers. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.

East Bengal more or less dominated most of the action in the first half of the game. The first real chance fell to East Bengal’s Plaza whose shot was parried away by the Churchill goalkeeper in the 12th minute. East Bengal keeper Subhashish Roy Chowdhury was also called into action around the 20th-minute mark when he made a fine save against Anthony Wolfe.

East Bengal finally took the lead in the 66th minute of the match through Wedson Anselme. Anselme wiggled past three Churchill Brothers defenders to slot the ball into the back of the net. Meanwhile, East Bengal keeper Subhasish Roy Chowdhury had to be taken off the pitch due to an injury.

It looked as if East Bengal would be able to hold on to pick up all three points in their first match in the Federation Cup. But to everyone’s disbelief, Churchill Brothers equalised through Kromah in the 81st minute of the match. Churchill could have easily snatched away a win from East Bengal but Lyngdoh missed a golden opportunity due to his indecisiveness.

Both East Bengal and Churchill are now on one point in Group A of the Federation Cup and they still have two games left to play.
