Ross Barkley was on the verge of joining Chelsea during the final hours of deadline day this summer transfer window. But the deal did not quite see the light of day as Barkley had a change of heart during the final stages of the transfer and decided against the move.

At first, the popular belief was that Barkley had changed his mind mid-medical and from there he took a u-turn. But the Everton player was quick to clear the air about the whole situation.

Now, former Everton defender Alan Stubbs has revealed why exactly the midfielder decided against the move to Stamford Bridge. As per Stubbs, Chelsea were unable to guarantee the player regular first-team starts – something that he was desperate to get with the World Cup coming up next year. And that is why Barkley thought best to stay back at Everton and give his Merseyside career one more chance.

Stubbs said, “Yes (there was doubt in his mind),”

“It looked like he was going to Chelsea but he had a change of heart at the last minute and decided against it.

“The one thing that Ross would have wanted was that he would be starting games and Chelsea couldn’t promise him that.

“That wasn’t going to be the case and that’s one of the reasons why he decided to stay at Everton.”

The former Everton man also feels that Chelsea will not return for the player during January and Barkley’s ultimate dream is to play for Tottenham Hotspur under Mauricio Pochettino. Having said that though, Everton’s new caretaker boss, David Unsworth has made it pretty clear that he wants Barkley to stay at the club.
