After endless debates and meeting, it looks like the ISL has finally got recognition from the AFC and FIFA as per Goal.

After the meeting between the AFC and the AIFF, the latter has decided to host both the I-League and ISL simultaneously. And it has also been decided that the AFC Cup playoffs position will be awarded to the Indian Super League Champions from next season, rather than to the winners of the Federation Cup.

So in a nutshell, the ISL has finally got recognition from all the major governing bodies of football. Playing in the AFC Cup means that the league is now recognised by both the AFC and FIFA. It is also to be noted that the AFC has asked the Indian football board to decide on the league structure for atleast the upcoming season.

And to add to that, the ISL will no longer be an eight-team tournament from next season as the AIFF is set to announce two new teams. The AIFF accepted bids for the inclusion of new teams. And they are likely to be announced before India’s match against Kyrgyzstan.

But both East Bengal and Mohun Bagan will not feature in the newly recognised league this season as they have failed to comply with the rules for participation. This means that both the Kolkata giants will have to play in the I-League.
