Italy failed to qualify for the next summer’s World Cup in Russia and suddenly the alarm bells have started ringing at Stamford Bridge. According to a report, the Italian FA is looking at Chelsea boss Antonio Conte as the primary target to replace current manager Gian Piero Ventura.

The Azzurri’s failed to qualify for the finale and this will be the first time in 60 years that the multiple time Champions will not be playing the tournament. And as per the reports, the top level of Italy’s football federation wants to sack their current manager with immediate effect. The Italian board supposedly wants to bring in a person who has previous experience with the national team and Conte perfectly fits that brief.

The current Chelsea boss has already had a stint with Italy when he was the manager of the national team for two straight years – from 2014 to 2016. And it was after leaving the job with the Azzurri’s that Conte joined Chelsea. Now it seems as if the Italian FA want him back at the helm.

While talking about the prospect of bringing back Conte as the national coach, Alessandro del Piero said, “He did great with Juve of course and a great job with the national team. We would love to have him back in Italy, of course, because he is a great coach. He would improve any team and this is what he did with Chelsea last season and what he did with Juve as well

“We had some problems and he fixed it, then won the title. He has some amazing qualities and that’s why he’s coaching the best teams in the world. I hope he will have a great period with Chelsea and then maybe one day come back.”

Chelsea and Antonio Conte have been having a strained relationship for the past couple of months and numerous reports have suggested that the Italian might move out of London before the end of the season. And now the supposed vacancy in the national level of Italy might just prompt the 48-year-old to move back to his homeland once and for all.
