Manchester United scraped through to a 1-0 victory over Bournemouth as Romelu Lukaku scored the only goal of the match.

After a humiliating defeat at the hands of Manchester City during the weekend, the United fans were desperate to see some attacking football and a statement of intent from their team. But what they eventually got was a typical Jose Mourinho styled performance. The Red Devils were opened up multiple times at the back while they failed to penetrate Eddie Howe’s defensive line. And one of the main reasons for this was the lack of creativity in and around the midfield area.

So this leads to the big question – Where was Henrikh Mkhitaryan?

Jose Mourinho was quizzed with the same question after the match ended and the Portuguese manager gave a very tactical based answer to it.

Mourinho said, “I can only have six [outfield] players on the bench and I try to have some balance on the bench.

“I had two defenders, a central defender and Blind, that can play in different areas.

“I have Ashley Young to cover the wing and wing-backs position, Ander Herrera is a midfield player, Zlatan is a striker, Marcus as a second striker and a winger, I played Martial, Mata and Lingard in the team, to have Mkhi means I don’t have one of them.

Mourinho’s statement clearly suggests that Henrikh Mkhitaryan has fallen down the pecking order and there are a bunch of players who are considered for selection ahead of him. The Armenian’s last involvement for United came against Brighton at home when he came off the bench while his last start came during the 1-0 defeat against Chelsea on November 5th.
