Jose Mourinho is targeting Samuel Umtiti from Barcelona as the Portuguese looks to solidify his defence.

Manchester United signed Victor Lindelof from Benfica during the summer transfer window but the Swedish defender has failed to make any sort of impression up until now. The £30 million pound acquisition can so far be classified as a flop and Mourinho desperately wants to bring in reinforcements during the January transfer window.

The United manager’s No 1 target remains Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane but Mourinho knows very well Zidane will try and hold onto Varane will all his grit and determination. That is why he is looking at the market for suitable replacements and Umtiti is believed to be on top of that list.

Umiti joined Barcelona back in 2016 on a five-year deal and in these 17 months, the player has made himself the first choice partner to Gerard Pique. But his current contract – which expires in 2021, still has the same clause which was penned in accordance with him being the second fiddle to Mascherano.

Umititi’s contract has a buyout clause of 53 million pounds which if rumours are to believed then Mourinho will be more than happy to pay.
