Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata recently pledged one percent of his wages as donations to various football-based charities and he is urging his fellow footballers to do the same.

Mata recently went to India with his partner and there he visited various slums across the country as part of an initiative for Common Goal.

The 29-year-old also travelled to Goa and Agra earlier in the summer and spoke passionately about the new cause.

“What we’re trying to do is define a shared social agenda for football,” Mata said. “Common Goal goes beyond individual brands and egos to deliver a greater impact. By making the pledge, we can form a lasting connection between football as a business and football as a tool for social change.

“One of the first lessons I learned in football is that it takes a team to win a game,” he added. “We live by this mantra on the pitch, yet we rarely see it play out in the social impact space, which is dominated by individual initiatives. Through Common Goal we’re creating a collaborative way for football to give back to society.

“I urge my fellow players to get involved.”

Juan Mata is Common Goal’s first member and the Spaniard is now trying to bring together a “Starting XI” who will pledge one percent of their salaries towards the initiative. And as a long-term vision, Common Goal is trying to pledge one percent of the whole footballing world’s revenue – roughly around $30 billion a year, to the initiative.
