Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Southampton defender Virgil Van Dijk for a staggering £75 million – inclusive of add-ons.

Liverpool announced on their official website that the deal has already been closed and the centre-back with join the Merseyside outfit on January 1st – as soon as the transfer window reopens.

An LFC statement said: “Liverpool Football Club can confirm they have reached an agreement with Southampton for the transfer of Virgil van Dijk.

“The Reds have agreed a deal with the south coast club, and the player himself, that will see the 26-year-old defender move to Anfield when the transfer window re-opens on January 1, 2018.

“The Netherlands international will be assigned squad number four, upon his arrival at Liverpool.”

Liverpool had been chasing the Dutch International all throughout the summer but they eventually had to pull out after the Saints accused them of approaching the player illegally.

Now the Reds have finally got their man by beating Chelsea and Manchester City – both of whom were tipped to be ahead of Liverpool in the Van Dijk race.
