Liverpool players’ ratings vs Man City: Were Klopp’s men robbed of a fair game?

Liverpool were expected to be the in-form team after thrashing Arsenal 4-0 in the week before the international break. However, that was not the case when the faced City at the Etihad Stadium and ended up 5-0 losers on the night.

Sadio Mane was sent off for a rash challenge on Ederson, after which the Reds were completely demoralised.

Aguero soon scored the opener, after which, the floodgates opened and City did not turn behind even once.

Jurgen Klopp will certainly not be pleased with this performance and will hope things change soon for the Merseysiders.

Here are the player ratings for Liverpool:

Simon Mignolet – 6/10

Harsh scoreline for the keeper who made a few brilliant saves to keep the score down to 5-0. He could not be blamed for any of the goals as the defenders in front of him had an awful afternoon.

Trent Alexander-Arnold -4.5/10

Real learning curve for the youngster. He was targeted throughout by City and it was a tough game for him. He will surely learn and improve though.

Joel Matip – 5/10

Could not organise his back line well enough. He will need a better defensive partner if Liverpool are to mount a title challenge. He himself had a poor performance too.

Ragnar Klavan – 4/10

Surprise inclusion ahead of Dejan Lovren, the Estonian was in the firing line right from the start. Played Aguero onside for the first and lost Jesus for his first. Poor display.

Alberto Moreno -5/10

The best out of the worst. He looked decent going forward in the first half too. Looks like he has made the position his own, although, the 5-0 scoreline surely does not bode well.

Emre Can – 5/10

Had just one successful tackle throughout the match which is not good enough for a so called combative midfielder. He was better on the ball than his fellow midfielders and shifted to a back three in the second half.

Georginio Wijnaldum – 5/10

Seems to struggle away from Anfield. Didn’t deal well with City’s threat, and it was one of those games where Liverpool will have been crying out for Philippe Coutinho.

Jordan Henderson – 5/10

Not a great outing for the captain. Made one good cross in the first half and offered nothing more than that. Quite sloppy in possession as well.

Sadio Mane – 4/10

Has to, unfortunately, take the blame for the defeat as his poor decision to go with a high boot eventually saw him sent off and cost Liverpool the match. Was growing in the game prior to that. Looked distraught with Ederson’s condition as he only had eyes on the ball.

Mohammed Salah – 5/10

Had to be sacrificed in the second half as Liverpool looked for solidity. He was easily Liverpool’s best player before the unfortunate incident as he made Otamendi look like a fool on a number of occasions.

Roberto Firmino – 5/10

Offered nothing special and looked isolated for major chunks of the game. Disappointing performance.

Substitutes:

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – 4.5/10

Lost 4-0 in his last game, and 5-0 in this game. Not the best start to his Liverpool career. Didn’t offer anything to change the game when he was introduced.

James Milner – 5/10

Came into the match in place of Wijnaldum but failed to affect the match.

Dominic Solanke – N/A
