Liverpool’s biggest summer target Virgil Van Dijk is still hopeful that he can move out of the Saint Mary’s in January.

Liverpool had shown some substantial interest in the Dutch defender but were ultimately unable to secure the services of the player during the summer. This nonacquisition has let Jurgen Klopp’s team a bit short in the defensive department but Van Dijk feels that he can join the Reds midway through the season.

Van Dijk was very hopeful to join Jurgen Klopp and in a bid to do that he even tried to force a move out of the club. But in the end, the 26-year-old had to stay back at Saint Mary’s making his first appearance for the Saints in Saturday’s loss to Stoke City.

While speaking to Fox Sports, Van Dijk said, “Of course, I wanted to go one step up, but eventually Southampton did not want to let me go.

“I’m a professional, so now I’ll give everything to the club. Halfway through the season, maybe we can see what’s possible.”

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is clearly having a headache as far as his defensive players are concerned simply because he has very little players to choose from. And rotating the players to give them proper rest is a luxury that Klopp just cannot afford.

In such a scenario it is quite practical that Liverpool will have no other option but to return for the Saints defender in 2018. And if things start deteriorating for the Reds then they will have to move as early as January.
