Liverpool have recently come under huge pressure due to the lack of depth in their defensive lineup. The Reds were after Southampton’s Virgil Van Dijk all throughout the summer in a bid to strengthen their back line. But Jurgen Klopp failed to bring the player in and now their defensive line looks wafer thin.

As of now, Liverpool have only three top-rated central defenders amongst their rank – Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan. And with the Merseyside outfit attacking all fronts this season it will be very difficult for these three players to maintain pace all throughout the season. That is why Klopp is looking to bring in a few defensive reinforcements during the January transfer window. And the latest addition to that wishlist is Lazio defender Stefan de Vrij.

According to Calciomercato Liverpool are eyeing the player for January. Jurgen Klopp how has a clear picture that acquiring Van Dijk will be very difficult as a result of which he feels Stefan will be a perfect alternative.

The Dutch International’s current contract with Lazio expires in June 2018 and he is yet to sign a new deal with the club. This means that the 25-year-old will be hot property come the January transfer window.

The player though has not refused to sign a new deal altogether and is open to committing his future to the club given that the management agrees to lower the release clause in his new contract to €25million from €30million.
