It looks as if Manchester United are trying to use Wayne Rooney as a counterweight in the possible transfer of Romelu Lukaku.

According to the Telegraph, Man Utd have renewed hopes of signing the Belgian after Everton have shown interest in bringing back Wayne Rooney to his boyhood club. It is believed that the Everton management have met with Rooney’s agent in order to make the move possible.

Rooney joined Man Utd from his boyhood club, Everton, back in 2004.

And United are supposedly trying to use this opportunity to bring Romelu Lukaku to Old Trafford. While it is no hidden secret that Lukaku himself has his eyes set on a return to Chelsea. The club that he left in 2014, in order to join the Toffees. But, it looks as if Chelsea are yet to make any kind of formal bid for the 24-year-old.

United have been trying to sign Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata for quite some time now. But the deal is making no sort of progress. There have various reports as to why Morata is still not a United player. Some say that it is because United are still unable to match the asking price set by Madrid. While others claim that Real’s pursuit of David De Gea is making things more complicated.

So United are now possibly looking at the alternative in the form of Lukaku. Everton have set a price tag of £100 million for the Belgian International, which is no doubt a hefty amount. And hence United are trying to use Wayne Rooney as a part of the bargain in order to lower the transfer fee.

If this swap deal does go through then it might possibly be a win-win situation for all the parties involved. Rooney is more or less set to leave United in the summer as he has found it really difficult to get first-team starts. And if Mourinho could use his captain’s departure to lure in one of Premier League’s best striker then it will be nothing short of gold for the manager.
