Manchester United’s return to Champions League football was marked with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Swiss side, FC Basel. Goals from Marouane Fellaini, Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford handed Jose Mourinho the perfect start in the Champions League.

Let us look at Man Utd vs FC Basel players’ ratings:

  • David de Gea – 6/10

Had a relatively quiet game. Did look a bit nervy on the ball and could have done better with his distribution. Was tested on one occasion by Elyounoussi, which forced a smart save from the Spaniard.

  • Ashley Young – 7.5/10

Ashley Young was a menace down United’s right. He was a breath of fresh air for when it came down to his deliveries, and it was his pinpoint cross to Fellaini that opened United’s account on the night.

  • Victor Lindelof – 7/10

His first start of the season, and he did not disappoint. Though he was relatively untested, he showed composure and a measure of calmness on the ball. Would have done a world of good to his confidence.

  • Chris Smalling – 6/10

Far from convincing from Chris Smalling. He looked nervy and played some ragged passes into the midfield.

  • Daley Blind – 6.5/10

The question arises yet again, is he really a full-back? Apart from a fine delivery for United’s second goal on the night, he lacked discipline in defence.

  • Paul Pogba – 6/10

Not how Paul would have imagined his night would end, but a hamstring injury forced him to be taken off. Let’s hope it isn’t too serious.

  • Nemanja Matic – 7/10

He left off from where he started. Brought sturdiness to midfield and his superior positioning allowed Fellaini to venture further forward.

  • Juan Mata – 6/10

Had a few smart touches in midfield, but that was about it from the Spaniard on the night. Substituted for the eventual goalscorer, Marcus Rashford.

  • Henrikh Mkhitaryan – 6/10

Another typical Mkhitaryan performances. Glimpses of quality in the early stages, even coming close to scoring after his shot ricocheted off the bar. But, just as always, he faded as the game progressed.

  • Anthony Martial – 7/10

Pace and trickery were on show as the Frenchman had a field day out on United’s left. He was no match for the opposition and did well in his second start of the season.

  • Romelu Lukaku – 8/10

Easily one of the contenders for Man of the Match alongside Ashley Young. Not only did he help himself to a goal; his hold up play and passing on the night was spot on.

Substitutes:

  • Marouane Fellaini – 7.5/10

An impact sub, by all means. He was brought on, in place of Paul Pogba after the latter had suffered a hamstring injury, and did not disappoint.  A tidy header and a constant menace for Basel in midfield, job well done indeed!

  • Marcus Rashford – 7/10

Is there anything this boy cannot do? Yet another debut, yet another goal for the youngster.

  • Jesse Lingard – 6/10

Brought on in place of Anthony Martial and stretched the defence with his runs. Should do more with such opportunities if he is to stake a claim for a starting spot.
