Manchester United midfielder might return back to Spain as Real Madrid want the player to become their new playmaker.

Real Madrid have had a terrible start to the season and are currently third on the league table – 8 points behind leaders Barcelona. And their coach Zinedine Zidane is keen to rectify the rest of the season by going after Mata during the January transfer window.

According to an exclusive report in the Express, the Los Blancos are eyeing a move for the Spaniard who came out of their youth system after which he moved to Valencia and made a name for himself.

Mata had been left out of the 18 man squad for the game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this past Sunday and many feel that Mourinho’s faith on the Spaniard has died down a bit. Initially, it was Mourinho who sold Mata to Manchester United during his second spell as the Chelsea manager but once the Portuguese took charge of United, Mata has played an important role in the first eleven.

Last season Mata played a key role in helping United win the Europa League and the League Cup but the new campaign has seen the Spaniard being substituted through all of the 11 starts that he has made.

This clearly indicates that Mata has not been up to the mark and his form has also significantly dropped. He is out of contract with the club at the end of the current season, and Manchester United want to cash in on him during the January window rather than let him leave for free next summer.
