Jose Mourinho has praised the professionalism of MLS-bound Bastian Schweinsteiger. The German midfielder joined United under Van Gaal in the summer of 2015 from German champions Bayern Munich. After having a good enough first season under the Dutchman he fell out of service once Jose Mourinho took charge of the club. Recently it was revealed that United have agreed to let the German go and he was headed for MLS to play for the Chicago Fire.

But now Mourinho has revealed that he regrets the treatment that he handed out to Bastian Schweinsteiger. Speaking to the press before the West Brom game, the Portuguese said, “Bastion is in the category of players that I feel sorry for something that I did to him. I don’t want to speak about him as a player, I don’t want to speak about him as whether I would buy him or not to buy him. I want to speak about him as a professional.”

Mourinho clearly stressed on the fact that he was pleased with the way Schweinsteiger handled the whole situation like a true professional and also regretted the treatment that was handed out to the German in the summer. He went on to add, “I would let him be in the squad. I knew, at that moment, we had too many players. If you remember, at that time, we had many players in this doubtful situation and we still had Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay and we had Andreas Pereira and Tyler Blackett and James Wilson.”

Mourinho agreed to the fact that Schweinsteiger might have been needed during this last few months of the season but when the German asked for a transfer he just had to let him go.

Bastian joined United in 2015 and went on to play a total of 31 games for the Red Devils. He was in the thick of things during Van Gaal’s regime but went Mourinho came into the picture he quickly fell down the pecking order and has been virtually non-existent during this season. He has decided to move to greener pastures and will play for MLS side Chicago Fire.
