Football is an ever-changing sport. Things can flip in a matter of seconds. It seems like only yesterday that United announced the record signing of Paul Pogba. His transfer fee of £89.3 million raised quite a lot of eyebrows. He was good, but was he good enough?

It’s safe to say that Paul played most of last season with that burden on his shoulders. Every time he took to the pitch, he was expected to pull a rabbit out of the hat. A good performance would often go unnoticed, a decent one would be criticized, and he’d be slaughtered if he had a bad day out.

Despite having such a good season in terms of pure statistics, few pundits feel he still has to prove his worth in a Manchester United shirt. Averaging a chance creation every 25 minutes and having hit the post nearly 10 times last season; one can only imagine how his season would have been viewed had those chances he created been converted, and all those near misses turned into a goal.

Fast forward to today, the transfer fee has been shattered; and that’s a mere understatement. Neymar’s transfer to PSG for £222 million, followed by Ousmane Dembele’s move to Barcelona for £98 million has freed Paul from the shackles of the world’s most expensive player. Could this finally be the season where he shines and proves his critics wrong?

There is no lack of firepower in this United side. They possess potency in attack, steel and agility in midfield, and finally look to have a stable defensive back line all operating in front of the very best in the business, David de Gea. Among the plethora of stars at the club, Paul Pogba stands out in ability and charisma. And Manchester United will turn to him in times of need.

Two games into the season, Paul has already shown he has much to achieve in terms of personal accolades. He’s got two goals in the first two games and has been the engine that has kept the attack ticking in both the games. It is still early on in the season but there are plenty of positives to look at as we head into the season.

For someone who is only 24 years old and is far from reaching his peak, Paul Pogba’s potential is scary. The maturity he possesses at his age is unreal. He does have off days and does frustrate from time to time. But maybe, just maybe, now that he’s not a prisoner to his transfer tag, he can show his true colours next season.

The next season is without a shade of doubt, his Rite of Passage.
