Well, it has finally happened. After a lot of delays and issues, Spurs right-back Kyle Walker has finally signed for Manchester City for £50 million.

Go on, rub your eyes again. But unfortunately, the amount is not going to change.

Manchester City and Pep Guardiola have paid £50 million to Spurs for the services of the English International. And with that, Spurs might just have made the best deal of this summer.

The Background:

Ever since a bust-up with Mauricio Pochettino, it was almost inevitable that Walker was going to leave Spurs in the summer. And Manchester City was more or less his pre-determined destination.

Spurs had quoted an initial price of £50 million while City were adamant not to pay anything more than £40 million for the 27-year-old. And both the clubs were trying to work out a deal for a fair amount of time. But Guardiola looked in no hurry whatsoever, simply because he knew that Dani Alves was to arrive from Juventus and he will atleast have the services of one right-back until the Kyle Walker deal is confirmed.

How did City end up paying £50M for Walker?

I am afraid you will have to blame Dani Alves and his decisions for that one. Alves looked all set to join City once he returned from his honeymoon. But the Brazilian changed his mind at the very end and flew off the Spain to join PSG. He claimed that he had moved there in order to ‘win trophies’ and because his wife ‘loved the city’

Whatever the reasons may be but it eventually came back to bite Pep Guardiola. Suddenly Man City looked to be in a fair bit of trouble. The club were to embark on their pre-season tour without a proper right-back amongst their ranks – having already released both Pablo Zabaleta and Bacary Sagna.

On the other hand, Spurs knew that City will have no other option but to come to them.  And the Spurs management were rubbing their hands at the prospect of dealing with City. They knew very well that they had the bargaining advantage, as City were almost powerless. And that is what has happened basically. City have gone to Spurs and paid them whatever they demanded for Kyle Walker, and in that process, Walker has suddenly emerged as the most expensive defender in world football.
