According to Bleacher Report, Liverpool have opened negotiations with Southampton for the transfer of defender Virgil Van Dijk.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp’s main priority this transfer window was to strengthen his defensive line for next season as the Reds return back to the Champions League. And the first target for Klopp in this rebuilding process was Van Dijk.

But as Liverpool were moving forward with the deal, Southampton cried foul over the whole process and demanded that Liverpool back out of the deal officially. Liverpool had to release an official statement claiming to withdraw all interest from the Dutch International.

Now it looks as if both the teams have buried past tensions and have sat down to negotiate a deal for the 26-year-old. According to the report, former football lawyer Daniel Vanderkamp has claimed that the deal is “moving along.” Vanderkamp who has worked with Liverpool in the past posted a tweet claiming that Liverpool and Southampton are working out a deal for the defender.

But shortly after this tweet Vanderkamp deleted his account.

Earlier when Liverpool had pulled out from the deal, the Dutchman was being linked to a series of Premier League clubs. But now as per the report, the defender has already handed in a transfer request to Southampton and has his heart set on a move to Anfield.

If Liverpool do manage to bring in Van Dijk then this will be their third signing of the season. The club have already signed Mohamed Salah from AS Roma and Dominic Solanke from Chelsea.
