Here are 2 reasons why Barcelona can’t sign this €50M winger who’s also wanted by Arsenal: Is a move to the EPL possible?

According to Spanish outlet SPORT, FC Barcelona are very much interested in signing Athletic Club winger Nico Williams but a move to the Premier League is much more likely as compared to a move to the Camp Nou.

Barcelona manager Xavi is very eager to sign the 21-year-old winger and as per major sources, the youngster is one of the priority targets for the Catalans this summer. Apart from Barca, Premier League side Arsenal have also been keeping tabs on the left-winger and they have been keeping tabs on his for a couple of weeks.

Nico Williams has come up through the ranks at Bilbao making his senior debut for the club in December of 2020 and this season, he has been one of the most exciting players in the La Liga. He’s played in 29 league games for the club, scoring four and assisting 10 goals with a passing accuracy of almost 80% and an xA of 7.37.

Here’s why Barcelona are set to miss out on Nico Williams:

Nico Williams has a release clause of €55 million and that’s going to be the first major stumbling block for Barcelona. Barcelona are in a major financial mess and it will be very hard for them to pay €55 million for the winger.

Apart from Williams, Barcelona have plenty of other targets as well and if they want to sign all of them the club will have to be ready to spend around €200 million during the summer window.

The other big reason why Barcelona might back off is because Nico Williams will demand a massive salary package from whichever club wishes to sign him and he’s already earning around €200,000 per week so the Catalans will have to be ready to pay him anywhere between €300,000 to 350,000.

If Barcelona cannot get rid of high-earners like Lewandowski and Frenkie de Jong it will be almost impossible to meet Williams’ wage demands.

Fabrizio Romano has said in his The Daily Briefing: “I’m not aware of talks so far but Nico has really many suitors. Barcelona, English top clubs and not only… there’s lot of interest.

“I’m still told all the clubs are waiting to understand the financial package wanted by the player in terms of commission and salary. Barca appreciate him but it’s still early stages.”

Will Williams be joining a Premier League club?

Chelsea and Aston Villa had been interested in signing Nico Williams but in the last couple of weeks, these two have cooled off their interest. Instead, it’s Arsenal who have made positive moves by getting in touch with the winger’s representatives over a possible summer deal.

Mikel Arteta wants to add competition for Gabriel Martinelli out on the left flank for the 24/25 season and if the Gunners can win the Premier League, they will make a great case for themselves. Even though his wage demands are a bit steep, a club like Arsenal have the resources to pull this one off.

Also, Athletic Bilbao will be more than willing to send Williams to the Premier League rather than see him join a direct rival like Barcelona.
