Is Wenger blaming his owner or Manchester City for not being able to sign a defender in January?

Arsenal have made two wonderful signings during the January transfer window in the form of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang but they also missed out on West Brom defender Jonny Evans.

The Gunners had shown a real inclination towards signing the former Manchester United centre-back but was unable to bring him onboard. And when he was asked why, the French manager came up with a very confusing answer.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola was also interested in signing Evans and it is no secret that both City and Arsenal went head to head for the centre-back at some point during the January transfer window.

But when Wenger was asked as to why he did not bring in Jonny Evans he claimed that money was the primary issue for the failure to sign him from West Brom.

Wenger told BT Sport: “I said many times that we did what we wanted to do but not all that we wanted to do.

“He was not available for what we could afford.”

When he was further questioned as to why he did not ask for more money from Arsenal’s biggest shareholder Stan Kroenke

“If Kroenke gives you £200m, Man City then get £400m,” he added.

So if we look a bit deep into Wenger’s comments then it seems that are two possible reasons why Evans is not a Gunner today.

It looks like Wenger exhausted most of his transfer budget on bringing Aubameyang to the Emirates and the other reason might be that Manchester City might have tried to offer West Brom more money for Jonny Evans.
