Croatia have defied all odds by reaching the World Cup final where they will face France on Sunday.
Croatia were pitched in Group D of the World Cup against the likes of Argentina, Nigeria and Iceland so to make it to the knockout stages of the tournament was the first major challenge that coach Zlatko Dalić has to oversee.
While many thought that finishing second in the Group would be a big achievement for the Croatian side but the Vatreni ended up topping their group – winning all of their three games.
After qualifying for the knockout stages, Croatia had to face Demark, Russia and England all of which went into extra-time and the first two game into penalties.
But still, the small European nation defied all odds and will now be playing their first ever World Cup final on Sunday.
While we were feeling happy for the achievements of such a small European nation, we came across a post that hit us hard.
After Croatia reached the final we know for a fact that they became the second smallest country(population 4.2 million) to ever play in the World Cup final(the first being Uruguay who had a population of 1.7 million when they played the 1930 final.
But the post by FOX Soccer compared the Croatian country with USA and now we suddenly realize how small a nation Croatia actually is.
And that makes it’s achievement all the more important.
According to FOX Soccer, if Croatia was hypothetically a city then it would just be the 15th-largest metro area in the United States.
US cities like Boston, Phoenix and Detroit all have more population than Croatia.
