Croatia shocked Argentina with a 3-0 defeat during their second game of the World Cup group stages and at the heart of it, all were midfielders, Ivan Rakitic and Luka Modric with the latter scoring a wonderful solo goal.
And now, Modric’s national teammate and Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has made a pretty bold claim about the Real Madrid playmaker.
Lovren has gone on to say that Luka Modric is one of the most under-valued players in the world and he would have won the Ballon d’Or if he was either Spanish or German.
Lovren said: ‘It is a real pleasure to play with Luka Modric, who is one of the best players in the world right now,
‘Modric would probably be getting more attention than he is right now if he was a German or Spanish player. He would maybe even be a Ballon d’Or winner.
‘Because we are a smaller country, he does get less attention than he deserves. But we are all football lovers and we know Modric is an incredible player. He is one of the best in the world right now.’
Luka Modric is without a doubt one of the best midfielders in world football right now and he was one half of the fulcrum which dismantled the Argentine side.
But we all know that FIFA and its contemporaries have been a bit biased towards forwards and striker who score a lot of goals. In fact, the last proper midfielder to win the Ballon d’Or was Kaka way back in 2007.
So it may not just be a thing about playing for countries like Spain or Germany.
But fans of Luka Modric might not be able to see him in action when Croatia take on Iceland in their final Group game. Croatia have already booked a place in the knockout stages and their coach Zlatko Dalic has made it clear that he will rest some of his key players.
