Dries Mertens Napoli to Chelsea

Chelsea are running the risk of losing out on Dries Mertens in case the current season of the Premier League was to restart next month.

The Blues have been chasing the centre-forward for a couple of weeks and now it’s more than certain that Mertens is planning to move out of Napoli as a free agent in the summer.

This season, the 33-year-old has been in top form, scoring 12 goals and providing 6 assists in just 29 games for the Italian side and it looks like he will not be signing a new deal with Napoli.

The fact that Mertens is set to be a free agent has attracted the attention of a number of big clubs and a couple of days ago, there were reports that the player has agreed on a deal to join AC Milan next season.

This news was a serious blow for Frank Lampard who’s looking for a partner to Tammy Abraham next season but now fresh report are suggesting Mertens is not likely to join the Rossoneri.

Will Chelsea miss out on Mertens as well?

As per the report, Dries Mertens is not too eager to join AC Milan since he wants to play in the Champions League next season and right now Milan are 7th on the Serie A table – 12 points behind the top-four spot.

This is great news for Inter Milan who also want to sign Mertens as Lautaro Martinez is about to join Barcelona but things could go really bad for Chelsea if they are not careful.

Right now the Blues are fourth on the Premier League table just three points above Man United who are fifth but all this could change if the current season was to restart.

Since Man City have a UCL ban, a fifth-place finish should also ensure Champions League qualification next season but the gap between the fourth and the sixth spot is of just five points.

So once the English season resumes Chelsea need to be really careful not to slip out of the top four or else Dries Mertens could snub a move to London as well and go onto join Inter Milan for the upcoming season.
