England like every other national team have named their final squad for the World Cup and on paper, the Three Lions are one of the strongest teams which will be participating in this month-long tournament.

England have done really well in their previous two major tournaments but going into the World Cup their form has been a bit dodgy. Since the World Cup is being played during the middle of the season, form and untimely injuries have played a major part in Gareth Southgate’s squad selection.

There have been some surprise inclusions and at the same time several major players have missed out despite them performing out of their skin for the previous 12 months.

We decided to take a look at some of the names who were unlucky to be omitted from the England squad simply because Southgate has chosen to put faith in his loyal and trusted players.

Ivan Toney – Brentford:

Last season, Ivan Toney scored 12 goals in the Premier League and this time around he’s already netted 10 goals in just 14 league matches. Still, somehow Newcastle’s Callum Wilson has been chosen ahead of him.

Toney was certainly not happy with the snub and he let his feelings known with his celebrations against Manchester City last weekend.

Jadon Sancho – Man United:

Sancho’s form has not been great lately so his omission did not raise a lot of eyebrows but he could have done really well as the backup to the likes of Saka and Rashford.

Like Jack Grealish, he could have been a big impact sub because Sancho can operate on either wing.

Fikayo Tomori – AC Milan:

Tomori left Chelsea to join AC Milan and since moving to the Serie A, the defender has gotten a new lease of life.

Last season, he was one of Milan’s standout players despite playing in only 15 games and he’s started the current campaign brilliantly as well.

It was a massive shocker that the England manager snubbed the 24-year-old and went on to select someone like Harry Maguire who’s hardly gotten any game time.

Tammy Abraham – Roma:

Another Chelsea player who moved to Italy in order to revive his career and Jose Mourinho has helped him achieve just that.

Last season, he scored 17 league goals for Roma and this time around he’s netted three goals along with one assist. While he isn’t good enough to replace someone like Harry Kane in the England first XI but like Sancho, Abraham could have also been a top backup.

James Ward-Prowse – Southampton:

The England manager chose to select Kalvin Phillips in his World Cup squad despite the Man City man playing in only one league game this campaign and in doing so he’s completely snubbed the Saints midfield artist.

Ward-Prowse is a set-piece wizard and last season he scored 10 and assisted five goals for Southampton. This one decision was a massive shocker because Phillips has hardly played since joining City plus he’s just recovered from an injury.

Jude Bellingham’s the one who’s most likely going to partner with Declan Rice but James Ward-Prowse would have been the perfect player to bring in off the bench.
