This €100M striker’s current manager does not wish to sell him despite interest from Arsenal and Chelsea: Should the two EPL sides look elsewhere?

Ruben Amorim has pledged his immediate future to Sporting and the manager is now eager to hold onto his premier striker Viktor Gyokeres.

Viktor Gyokeres has been scoring goals for fun this season and Premier League sides Arsenal and Chelsea have been strongly linked with a summer move for the 25-year-old.

Sporting are reportedly willing to let him leave if his €100 million release clause is triggered and even though it will be a tough ask, manager Ruben Amorim wants to keep him at the club next season.

“We’re going to do our utmost to keep Viktor, he’s a very important player for us, but we’ve been through these situations before”, Amorim said at a press conference[h/t Inside Football].
“We have to safeguard everything and look to the future. We’re counting on Viktor for next year, but he’s a great player so we’ll have to wait [to see if he stays].”

Will Sporting be successful in holding onto Viktor Gyokeres?

Viktor Gyokeres joined Sporting CP from Coventry City last summer and in just one season, he has netted 41 goals across all competitions. In 32 league appearances, he has scored 27 goals along with 10 assists, out of which only 23 goals have come from open play.

The 25-year-old has admitted that even though he loves playing for Sporting his future remains uncertain and in our opinion, it’s hard to see him playing in Portugal for one more season.

While addressing his exit rumours, he had told Fotbollskanalen last month(as quoted by Goal): “It’s a sign that I’ve performed well. But it’s not something I take too seriously, since it’s just speculation. But of course, it’s fun. We’ll see this summer. It’s not something I know about myself, what will happen. I enjoy Sporting extremely well and feel no stress about the summer coming quickly.”

Because Arsenal are planning to sell Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Jesus, Viktor Gyokeres is transfer priority number one for them and the Gunners are very much ready to pay his release clause. Chelsea are also on the lookout for a new striker but the Blues are still to make up their mind on Gyokeres and Napoli’s Victor Osimhen. Osimhen remains a favourite but the Blues management are a bit sceptical because he’s he was phenomenal last season but his form has dipped this campaign.

Gyokeres had failed to prove his worth at clubs like Brighton, Swansea and Coventry but he’s been able to break that streak with Sporting CP. In 31 league appearances, the striker has managed 55 shots on target and he has an xG of 21.58. His 27 goals in 32 league matches make him the fourth-best striker in the 10 top leagues.

Sporting will obviously put up a brave face because they will not be happy to lose such an incredible asset after just one season but the release clause makes them helpless. If either Arsenal or Chelsea are ready to pay €100 million, Viktor Gyokeres will push for an exit.

Now, talking about who’s more likely to sign the 25-year-old, we believe Champions League football, regular game time and a hefty salary package will be the three major factors in determining the forward’s decision. Whoever is offering these will have a better chance of landing him.
