Liverpool full-back Andy Robertson picked up an ankle injury during the club’s pre-season friendly against Athletic Bilbao and now he’s a major doubt for their season opener vs Norwich City.

The 27-year-old twisted his ankle while blocking a cross in the first half, following which he was immediately taken off the pitch.

And with just days to go for their first match of the 21/22 season, Jurgen Klopp has admitted that Andy Robertson remains a doubt for Saturday’s encounter.

“We obviously don’t know in the moment how serious it is,” Klopp said in his post-match press conference, as quoted.

“It was pretty painful and that’s why Andy went off. You probably saw it on the TV pictures better than we did, but he got the ball, the ball on the front of his foot, [and] twisted the ankle.

“The pain settled already, but we cannot say anything further without further assessment tomorrow.

“He has to get a scan and then we will know more.”

This is a major headache for the Liverpool manager since he does not have any top-class backup in that area of the pitch.

If Andy Robertson is absent then Kostas Tsimikas will be the next best choice to start at left-back. But this isn’t something that will please Klopp since he has played only five minutes last season in the Premier League.

If Tsimikas is indeed named in the starting line-up during the weekend then Norwich City will undoubtedly target that area in the hopes that the 25-year-old crumbles under pressure.

The manager also has the option of using James Milner in the left-back role but this will be a really tricky situation since a few first-team midfielders were on an extended holiday so they might not be 100% fit to play on Saturday.

UPDATE:

The left-back has just confirmed on Twitter that he has sustained ligament damage but thankfully, it’s not a very serious injury.

Robertson wrote: “Thanks to everyone for the kind messages and support. Scan suggests nothing too major but there’s some ligament damage which will need to mend. I will be grafting every day so I can help the team again sooner rather than later. Good luck to the boys playing tonight #YNWA.”
