Tottenham Hotspur are in urgent need of midfield reinforcements and according to The Telegraph, Spurs are planning to go after Angel Gomes.

Initially, there were plans to sign Angel Gomes at the end of this season, when he becomes a free agent but with so many injuries, Ange needs immediate backup. The manager currently has only four fit midfielders and it’s so bad that Pape Sarr had to play through injury during Tottenham’s loss to Leicester City.

Angel Gomes is out of contract at Lille in the summer and instead of signing him as a free agent, Tottenham are hoping they will be able to land him for a bargain fee before deadline day. His current market value is €25 million so there’s a fair chance, Levy will be able to bring him on board for €15-20 million.

Should Tottenham take a risk of signing Angel Gomes?

Gomes is a product of Manchester United’s academy but the midfielder didn’t find his feet at Old Trafford. Over 3 years, he played only 10 games for the senior side but since joining Lille, he’s transformed his career.

The 24-year-old has featured in 131 games for the French side and he’s come off age in the Ligue 1. The 2023/24 campaign was undoubtedly his best campaign in France when he scored two and assisted 10 goals in 45 appearances for the club.

Angel Gomes is a technically gifted and adaptable midfielder who might primarily be an attacking midfielder but is equally comfortable with playing in a central or deep-lying role.

He’s also great in tight spaces and can very confidently dictate the pace of the game which is something that Spurs have been badly missing under their Australian manager.

Ideally, the Tottenham fans will want to see some world-class arrivals but their club’s currently 15th on the league table. There’s no way any big star will agree to join them at the moment so, Ange will have to settle with bargain buys like Angel Gomes.

Gomes is leaving Lille because he wants a fresh challenge and if he gets the chance to play for the Lilywhites, we doubt if he will pass it up.

Daniel Levy has hardly spent big money in the transfer market and there’s no way he will break the bank during the middle of a campaign. At around €20 million, Angel Gomes seems to be a decent bet to try and take Spurs back into the top half of the table.
