Are Aston Villa on the verge of signing this 22Y/O full-back as his parent club identifies an alternative?

Rangers FC have made enquiries about Stoke City defender Josh Tymon and according to Paul Robinson, this only means one of Barisic or Calvin Bassey is going to leave soon. Aston Villa have shown a real inclination towards signing Bassey so maybe he’s the one who is going to be sold.

Calvin Bassey has had a wonderful 21/22 season with the Gers and Gerrard is very keen to bring him into the Premier League. And now that the Gers boss has registered an interest in the Stoke defender, Aston Villa will be very confident of signing the Nigerian.

Robinson told Football Insider: “You would think so, reading between the lines.

“Rangers are blessed with two quality players in the left-back position. If they are looking to sign another one, alarm bells are ringing. You immediately think one of them is going to leave. That is natural.

“Whether it happens or not is another thing. Only time will tell.

“Rangers have two left-backs who are highly sought-after though. Bassey is one that Steven Gerrard wants. He has had that working relationship with him before and knows just how good he is.”

Will Aston Villa be able to sign Calvin Bassey?

Rangers need funds to be able to land their own signings so they are very much open to cashing in on Borna Barisic or Bassey. Since Aston Villa are so interested in the latter, we think GVB is going to part ways with the 22-year-old and hold onto Barisic.

However, the Ibrox outfit know very well how valuable the full-back is which is why they are looking for a club-record fee in his exchange.

Various experts are suggesting that Rangers are expecting to bag a fee of more than £25 million for their most prized asset and this could be a slight stumbling block for Villa.

Many people might be worried about paying so much for someone who’s only had one good season but apart from playing as a left-back, Calvin Bassey can also double up as a central defender which means Gerrard will be able to sign two players at the price of one.

If Aston Villa can agree on a fee then it’s only a matter of time before Bassey arrives at Villa Park.
