Last week, Arsenal joined Chelsea in the pursuit of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and now according to a report by Football Insider, Manchester United are also interested in the centre-forward.
Chelsea and Newcastle United have had Dominic Calvert-Lewin on their wishlist for quite some time and now, the Gunners are also looking at him as Mikel Arteta is desperate to add a new centre-forward to his squad before deadline day.
With less than one year remaining on his contract, Everton are willing to cash in on DCL and it seems like the forward’s bargain transfer value is the primary reason why so many big clubs are being linked with him. Many experts are claiming that Everton will let him go if a club is willing to put €30-35 million on the table.
Is Dominic Calvert-Lewin really worth so much hype?
Calvert-Lewin made his debut for Everton in 2016 and so far, he has played 249 games for the club. He has scored 68 goals for the Toffees but constant injuries woes have been a serious setback.
Since making his debut, the forward has missed 97 games due to 14 different injuries and during the 21/22 and 22/23 seasons alone, he missed 34 and 29 matches respectively.
Last campaign, he was mostly injury-free, playing 38 games across all competitions however, the centre-forward scored only 8 goals. During the 23/24 season, he had an xG of 12.93 in 32 Premier League games but Dominic Calvert-Lewin found the back of the net only 7 times.
There’s no way an injury-prone striker like him can be trusted to lead the line for the entirety of the season and all three interested sides want him probably as a backup to their main centre-forwards.
Are Manchester United seriously considering a late bid for the Everton forward?
Manchester United have Rasmus Hojlund in their squad and this summer they have also signed Joshua Zirkzee. The summer signing is yet to become a regular starter for the club but in his first two substitute appearances, the 23-year-old has scored one goal with an xG of 9.01.
Arsenal and Chelsea trying to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin as a backup striker makes a lot of sense because both the London sides need to strengthen their attacking areas. However, we are highly doubtful if Manchester United will make any sort of late bid for the Everton man, despite his affordable transfer value.
United have wrapped up the signing of Manuel Ugarte from PSG and now, they will probably try to bring in a new left-back before the transfer window shuts down.
