Football UEFA Champions League

Recently there had been rumours circulating that UEFA which is the governing body of football in Europe will advise the domestic leagues to crown teams who are currently leading their championships as the ultimate winners if the tournaments cannot be finished in time.

Almost all of the major footballing leagues in Europe have been suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic with most of them expected to come back on sometime towards the first week of April.

But with the rate at which this virus has been spreading across the globe, there’a big chance that this first deadline could be missed meaning UEFA could very well intervene in this matter.

And just as an uproar was starting regarding this news, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has come out to clear the air saying that this was just a rumour.

“I’ve saw and heard some again fake news that Uefa will advise leagues to finish the championships now and decide that the winners are the ones who are number one now,” the UEFA boss said, as reported.

“I can say that it’s not true. Our goal is to finish the leagues and we didn’t recommend anything like that to any association or any league.”

Can UEFA intervene in these matters?

Well, for starters, the last thing all the authorities want is to cancel the leagues due to the pandemic. And we are sure that such is the feeling of UEFA as well.

Instead of trying to cancel all the leagues, UEFA has made sure that the remainder of the games can be finished by postponed the Champions League and Europa League finals by one month and also pushing the EURO to the summer of 2021.

Also, there have been reports that some Premier League clubs are willing to play behind closed doors and at neutral venues in order to finish the remainder of the games.

So be rest assured that UEFA will not try and put their hands where they do not belong.
