France won the 2018 World Cup after beating Croatia 4-2 in Sunday’s final and one of the key players for Les Bleus in Russia was former Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud.

Giroud has always been a favourite for France manager Didier Deschamps and this tournament the former Gunners frontman proved to be a pivotal figure up front.

Olivier Giroud joined Arsenal in 2012 from French side Montpellier and since then the forward has played in 253 games for the Gunners. But as the first team opportunities started drying up, the Frenchman moved to Chelsea at the start of the new year.




So technically it is a Chelsea player who has lifted the World Cup but still, Arsenal showed class and congratulated the 31-year-old for his achievements.

But that congratulatory message came with a twist.

The Gunners posted a tweet after France won the World Cup in which the London club showed Olivier Giroud’s journey to the World Cup trophy.




Arsenal wrote: “From Grenoble to Istres From Tours to Montpellier From Arsenal to a regular for France And now… a WorldCup winner! What a journey you’ve had, Olivier – we’re all so pleased for you.”






Did you notice something unusual in that tweet?

Olivier Giroud’s former club have mentioned all the clubs that he has played for during his professional career but they cheekily skipped the name of their London rivals, Chelsea.




The 31-year-old moved to Chelsea in January because he wanted more game time in order to increase his chances of playing in the World Cup and in all fairness the forward made a decent impact – scoring 5 goals in 18 games during the second half of the tournament.

Ever since Arsenal put out this tweet the Chelsea fans have called out the club branding the Premier League outfit of having double standards.
