In a piece of bizarre transfer news, Shkodran Mustafi seems to have agreed on a deal in principle with Inter Milan. This transfer might see Arsenal recoup the £34 million they had originally paid for his services. This will be Arsenal’s second high profile defensive departure, with Gabriel joining Valencia earlier in the season.

Mustafi joined Arsenal last season after impressing with Valencia CF in La Liga. His signing was a relief to many of the Arsenal fans as they felt their weak defence needed reinforcements.

While Mustafi had a positive start to his Arsenal career as his every time he took to the pitch, Arsenal never lost. That lasted for 18 games, after which it all started going downhill for the German international. This season too, he’s had an unconvincing start. But he is one of the most important defenders in the squad, simply because there aren’t many!

But why does Mustafi want to leave Arsenal after just one season with the Gunners?

Let’s look at a few reasons that could possibly be why he feels like calling it quits in North London.

Mustafi could feel like he does not belong in the squad and in Arsene’s plans. Time and again, he’s being played in a system that clearly does not suit him.

To be honest, any player who is currently playing under Arsene will find it difficult to comprehend. The Frenchman has taken some questionable decisions of late, baffling the fans and the players alike. So maybe his reluctance to play under Wenger, or in a system employed by Wenger is the reason for his change of heart.

Another reason might be the fact that Arsenal aren’t really contenders for trophies this season. They did win the Community Shield early on in the season, but even the fans will admit that Arsenal lack any conviction going into the season.

Statement signings came far and few, none of the deadwood has been cleared and players being played out of position, Arsenal seem to be in tatters.

Whatever seems to be the reason, the fact that Arsenal are willing to sell a defender while lacking depth in the position doesn’t bode too well for them.
