Arsenal have been linked with Barcelona right-back Emerson Royal for a couple of months now but it looks like they are going to face some stiff competition from Premier League rivals Everton.

The 22-year-old was a failed project at Barcelona following which he was sent to Real Betis in January of 2019 but is expected to return to the club at the end of this season. This season, the right-back has been pretty steady at Betis, featuring in 33 La Liga matches so far which is why he wants to sit down with the coaching staff at Barcelona and sort out his future.

If the manager at Barcelona cannot guarantee him regular first-team starts then Emerson Royal will like to move to the Premier League and this is why Arsenal were said to be the first in line.

Now according to reports in Spain, Everton have also joined the race and will now compete with the North London club for the signature of the 22-year-old.

TEAMtalk cites Diario Sport claiming: “Arsenal are the favourites to sign Emerson Royal from Barcelona, but face competition from Everton, according to reports.

“Emerson is currently at Real Betis as part of a deal with Barcelona but will return to Camp Nou in the summer. It is unlikely he will be guaranteed a regular role but he is confident of making an impact. If he is told he is not in their plans, though, he will have to find a solution.

“That solution could be to move to the Premier League. Emerson has interest from Arsenal and Everton, according to Diario Sport.”

With Hector Bellerin leaving in the summer, Arsenal are hunting for his long-term replacement and for the longest time it was thought that Mikel Arteta will be able to bring in Emerson Royal without much fuss.

Now, this entry of Everton is sure to spice things up and given how poorly Arsenal have performed this season, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the right-back rejected a move to the Emirates and joined the Toffees instead.

Also, Everton are currently being coached by Carlo Ancelotti and any young player would love to play under such an esteemed manager.
