Aston Villa striker Wesley has joined Club Brugge on loan this summer and it looks like his time at Villa Park might well and truly be over.

Villa had signed the striker from Club Brugge in 2019 but since then, he has failed to execute any sort of notable involvement at the club, making just three appearances last season.

And according to Gabby Agbonlahor, Wesley has proven to be an inferior signing for Aston Villa and he is not likely to play for them anymore.

He told Football Insider: “I said this last season and people were not happy with what I said, he’s not good enough for the Premier League.

“He’s not good enough for Aston Villa and he doesn’t suit Aston Villa’s style of play. Aston Villa want quick players, quick strikers who can get in behind and have intelligence like Watkins, like Ings, who can score out of nothing.

“Wesley was more of a striker that you would bring on if you needed a goal, just to be a lump up there, to bully and win flick-ons.

“I understand why he’s been allowed to go on loan, it makes sense. Keinan Davis will be back from injury soon, he can be the third choice striker. I don’t think he will ever play for Aston Villa again.

“The people that were making these transfers need to start going for the right players because it happened with [Mbwana] Samatta and it happened with Wesley.

“Just because someone scored loads of goals in Belgium, it doesn’t mean they’re going to score loads of goals in the Premier League. It’s a totally different league.

“We’ve learnt our lesson with those two players now. You’re better off looking at the Championship than the Belgian league.”

Aston Villa have brought in Danny Ings this summer from Southampton and they also have 25-year-old Ollie Watkins for backup. So it makes perfect sense to send Wesley out on loan.

Villa had spent £22.50 million on him in 2019 but all that money has gone down the drain since, in his first season, he had only managed five league goals in 21 appearances.

His Aston Villa deal with Dean Smith’s side expires in 2024 and his current market value is £11.7 million and there’s a massive chance Brugee might hold onto him permanently at the end of this season if he can deliver goals for them.
