Ben Chilwell seems to have no future at Chelsea and according to a report in talkSPORT, Manchester United have been given the chance to sign the 27-year-old defender.
Chelsea had brought in Chilwell from Leicester City in 2020 for almost €50 million but so far, he’s played in just 106 games for the club. Now, with a new manager coming in, the England international has been frozen out of the squad and Enzo Maresca has asked his management to get rid of the full-back.
Before the start of the new season, Maresca was quite critical of Ben Chilwell saying: “With Chilly it’s quite clear. I love the way he trains, I love the way he is but the problem is that he struggles with us a little bit to find his best position.
“When you train everyday and you don’t get minutes, it’s not good for them and it’s not good for me because I need to make decisions. For some players, it’s sometimes better to leave and to go somewhere to get minutes. We will see what happens, the transfer window is open and we will see what happens.”
Should Manchester United go for Ben Chilwell?
Manchester United currently have Luke Shaw and Malacia as their two left-backs but both of them are heavily injury prone. Tyrell Malacia has been out of action since July of 2023 and he is not expected to make a comeback before October.
To make matters worse, Luke Shaw has also picked up an injury and he will be out of action for around six weeks. This means Erik ten Hag does not have a recognised left-back right now and in matchweek one, Diogo Dalot had to slot into that position.
In such a scenario, it makes sense that Man United will try to sign a new left-back before deadline day and in recent days, the club have been linked with Spurs outcast Sergio Reguilon.
Chilwell’s valuation is only €28 million and because Chelsea want to get rid of him, United might be able to sign him for around €20-25 million. However, like Shaw and Malacia, Ben Chilwell is also massively injury-prone and last season, he missed 35 games across all competitions due to 6 separate injuries.
In the previous campaign, Ben Chilwell played in only 13 Premier League games and had an xA of 1.80 while creating 14 chances. He had a single assist in 756 minutes of league football.
The last thing Ten Hag will want is to add another defender who spends more time in the treatment room instead of being on the pitch.
If Manchester United are seriously interested in bringing in a new left-back then going after Sergio Reguilon will make a lot more sense. Last season Reguilon spent several months on loan at Old Trafford and he will also be available for a similar price tag as Ben Chilwell. Reguilon has no future at Spurs and as per some rumours, he is open to a return to Manchester United because he feels his time at the club was pretty positive.
