England take on Germany in the Round of 16 of the European Championship and it looks like both Mason Mount and Phil Foden will return to the starting XI.

The pair missed the last group game against the Czech Republic but the Daily Mail are claiming that manager Gareth Southgate is planning to use them on Tuesday.

Rob Draper writes: “Phil Foden looks set to return for England their last-16 game against Germany on Tuesday with Mason Mount in contention to start after being confined to quarantine.

“Southgate sees both as key starters and there is an expectation that Foden, having been rested, will come back into the team, at the expense of Bukayo Saka, who was man of the match against the Czechs.

“Mount remains a doubt but his fitness and ability to train individually, along with Ben Chilwell who is also isolating, means that there is growing hope he could start if needed.

“Both players are joining in team meetings on Zoom and there has been an effort to keep them involved in squad activities where possible, with the midweek Ed Sheeran concert taking place outside their hotel rooms so they could watch from their balconies.”

Mason Mount has been training individually due to the isolation protocols and his last day of quarantine ends on Monday, 28. So, if he is fully fit then the Chelsea forward will start in the No 10 role.

But since the report is claiming that Phil Foden is also expected to come back into the side, this could lead to a few broken hearts on Tuesday.

Firstly, young Bukayo Saka will be sacrificed since Foden is going to play on the right wing. Saka had a very good outing in England’s final group game and some people had also urged the manager to keep him in the line-up against Germany.

But, there’s no way Gareth Southgate is going to be ready to use Bukayo Saka ahead of Phil Foden.

If Foden and Mount are both set to be included in the starting line-up then there will be only one more winger’s spot up for grabs. And, it will be a fight between Jack Grealish and Raheem Sterling.

Grealish was one of the standout players against the Czech while Sterling scored the only goal in that game. So it will be really harsh to leave either one of them out.

But since Sterling will be a bit more effective down the left wing, we expect the Manchester City man to get the nod ahead of Grealish.

But we can understand why the England boss is planning to go with Mason Mount and not Jack Grealish in the attacking midfielder’s role since the Chelsea man is much more industrious without the ball and can also help out in defence.
