Premier League side Chelsea have already been linked with Calvin Bassey and now Aston Vila have also stepped up their interest in signing Rangers defender, according to The Times.

Villa have already completed the signings of Philippe Coutinho and Boubacar Kamara and now Gerrard wants a reunion with the Nigerian centre-back.

Calvin Bassey has done remarkably well for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side and he was one of the standout players for Rangers in the Europa League final. The 22-year-old was also named in the Europa League team of the year.

Gerrard knows him very well from his Ibrox days and since the Villa boss is actively looking for a new defender, someone like Bassey can solve several of Villa’s problems.

Will Calvin Bassey be a good signing for Aston Villa?

Steven Gerrard is looking to add competition for the left-back role and since Calvin Bassey can play both as a left-back as well as a centre-half, he will come in very handy for the Liverpool legend.

The 22-year-old has been with Rangers since 2020 and in these two years, he has played 65 games for the Ibrox, across all competitions.

However, Aston Villa are not the only side who are interested in the defender because Chelsea have also been keeping tabs on him. The Blues have a 200 million pound transfer budget for the summer plus they also need to bring in at least two defenders before the new season begins.

Will Rangers be able to get good value from the 22-year-old’s sale?

Bayern Munich’s name has also been floating on the horizon but these rumours are yet to pick up speed. We will have to wait and see how Bayern move in the coming weeks but still interest from Chelsea and Aston Villa is great news for Rangers.

A club like Rangers will not be able to hold onto Calvin Bassey if the two Premier League clubs step up their pursuit but with so many big clubs interested in the defender, the club will at least be able to bag a record transfer fee for him.

A fee of around £15-20 million should be a problem for either of the two English teams but such a massive amount will go a long way in helping Rangers in the transfer market.
