Both Rangers & Celtic FC could miss out on this 25-year-old defender: Here’s why

Scottish Premiership sides Rangers and Celtic FC have been constantly linked with Preston North End centre-back Ben Davies. But according to the latest report in Football Insider, the Glasgow sides could miss out on the 25-year-old.

The report claims: “Ben Davies has been offered a club-record contract by Preston North End to fend off Glasgow giants Rangers and Celtic among others, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

“A Preston source has told Football Insider that Davies has been offered a record contract in the region of £17,000-a-week to stop him quitting Deepdale either this month or in the summer.”

Ben Davies is under contract with the Championship side until the summer of 2021 meaning if he does not agree to a new deal then clubs like Celtic FC and Rangers will have the opportunity to sign him for free at the end of the current season.

That though will be easier said than done since some rumours in England claim that Premier League side Sheffield United are keen to sign the central defender for the upcoming campaign.

If the Blades are serious about getting their hands on Ben Davies then clubs like Celtic and Rangers will find it really hard to convince the defender to move out of England and join the SPFL.

One ray of hope for the Old Firm clubs is the fact that Sheffield United could face relegation from the Premier League this season meaning Chris Wilder’s side will have to cut down on their wage bills next season.

And in such a scenario, the playing field will more or less level up for teams like Celtic FC and Rangers on the negotiation table.
