Timo Werner to Chelsea EPL

Chelsea forward Timo Werner has been pathetically underwhelming this season and pundit Paul Merson claims it’s his laziness that is the root cause for all the problems.

Timo Werner was supposed to be the marquee signing for Chelsea this campaign but the forward has managed to score only six goals in 33 Premier League games so far, a huge dip in form from his time in Germany.

Merson feels the German international is yet to hit peak form in the Premier League and part of the reason why is looking so average is that he’s not ready to work that extra bit to be in the right positions at the right time.

The pundit told Sky Sports: “One thing that’s still not quite right though, is the centre forward position.

“I watch Timo Werner and I just think there’s something missing still.

“There was an instance in the game against Man City where he did great to get in down the left-hand side of the penalty area and he just shoots. He shoots and he hits the side netting and it’s never going to go in in a million years. Why did you shoot there?

“His decision-making is not great.

“Against Real Madrid he gets caught offside when he should never be offside. He’s got unbelievable pace, but he gets a bit lazy in his runs. He’s certainly not a lazy player, but he’s just got to take more care in making runs in behind. He runs offside too many times for me.”

Timo Werner has upped his game ever since Thomas Tuchel has taken charge at Chelsea and apart from the six goals, the forward has also made 11 league assists this season, which in all honesty is not a bad number.

But he was brought in to be the first-choice goalscorer at the club but right now, it’s people like Kai Havertz who are leading the line while Werner plays in more of a supporting role.

Next up, Chelsea take on Arsenal and this could be the ideal game for Timo Werner to get a few goals under his belt. The Gunners have been in really form this season and key defenders like David Luiz and Pablo Mari are not expected to play in this match.

Arsenal have conceded 38 goals in the league this season and have suffered 13 losses so far so Tuchel will be urging Timo Werner to take on the Arsenal defenders at every given opportunity.
