Carabao Cup: How much prize money do the winners and losers get in the EFL Cup?

Wembley England

The Carabao Cup finale was held on Sunday at Wembley where Liverpool came out as the winners by beating Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea in an intense battle.

Liverpool won the final in a dramatic penalty shootout, thereby lifting their first domestic trophy of the season. While the finale was a very glitzy affair but it’s quite surprising to see the amount of prize money that Jurgen Klopp’s side have received.

As per a report by the Liverpool Echo, the Anfield outfit will get a cheque of just £100,000 for winning one of the major tournaments in England.

To be more specific the prize pool of the Carabao Cup is a modest £200,000 out of which Liverpool get half of the money.

How is the Carabao Cup prize money distributed?

Out of the total prize pot, Liverpool will obviously get the aforesaid amount and then runners-up Chelsea will get £50,000.

The losing semi-finalists Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur will get £25,000 each.

Is money the only factor in terms of winning a trophy?

For a giant club like Liverpool, winning a domestic trophy will mean a lot more than the amount of money they will receive but the harsh truth is that every penny matters, especially after such a massive pandemic.

Almost all of the clubs in England have had to bear prominent losses due to COVID so the last thing they can expect is a good chunk of money when they win one of the top-three footballing tournaments in the country.

During the 2019-20 season, the Premier League sides suffered a cumulative loss of almost £1 billion(pre-tax) and most of them haven’t been able to recover from those losses.

In fact, Liverpool have recently released their financial statement for the 2020/21 season where they have reported a £4.8 million loss. So, a winning prize of just £100,000 will do absolutely nothing to cover up this loss.

For a club like Chelsea, money has never been a problem thanks to their owner and for Arsenal and Tottenham, playing in the Carabao Cup meant the chance to end their long trophy drought and pick up a silverware.
